Maksim A. Shlykov, MD, MSBoard Certified & Fellowship TrainedOrthopedic Spine SurgeonSpecializing in Spine Surgery
Maksim "Max" A. Shlykov, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon at the Maryland Spine Center at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He joined the medical staff in 2023 where he has served on a number of patient safety and quality committees. His clinical interests include minimally invasive spine surgery, cervical and lumbar decompression and fusion, cervical and lumbar disc replacement, revision spine surgery, spinal deformity surgery, as well as robotics and navigation in spine surgery. His goal is always to recommend the most appropriate treatment approach, beginning with conservative management whenever possible and utilizing surgery only when necessary. He aims to help patients achieve pain relief, restore mobility, and return to the activities that matter most to them.
Dr. Shlykov has advanced fellowship training in minimally invasive and open spine surgery, motion preservation, spine deformity, tumors, trauma, pediatric spine surgery and navigated and robotic spine surgery. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Shlykov has been actively involved in spine research and academic medicine. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in orthopedic and spine journals and has presented research at national and international meetings. His work has focused on spinal disorders, surgical outcomes, and musculoskeletal research.
Dr. Shlykov was born in Uzbekistan before moving to Russia and later to the United States. He is fluent in Russian and regularly cares for Russian-speaking patients who appreciate the ability to discuss their spine conditions in their native language. His undergraduate degree is from University of California San Diego, graduating Cum Laude in 2 years. He then earned a Master’s degree at UC San Diego, during which his research contributed to the discovery of a novel superfamily of transport proteins. Dr. Shlykov earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School, where he graduated with distinction in research and service. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency and advanced spine surgery fellowship at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, one of the nation’s leading orthopedic and spine training programs. He also completed an enfolded orthopedic pediatric orthopedic and spine fellowship at Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis, Missouri. During his training, he gained extensive experience treating complex spinal conditions and performing advanced spine surgeries.
Dr. Shlykov has become one of Baltimore’s leading and innovative spine specialists. He has developed strong relationships with primary care doctors, surgical colleagues, physical therapists and pain management physicians due to his local and national reputation, exceptional patient care and high surgical volume. He sees numerous second opinion cases weekly from across Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. He also has a robust workers’ compensation and personal injury practice. Dr. Shlykov is committed to offering patients innovative care and works with leading spine companies to advance the field of spine surgery.
